We rebooted, and Paint Shop Pro was fine afterward. This happened to us months after writing this article, and sure enough, there was an update after we checked. Remember, even if it shows you're up to date, check for updates. Go to your Control Panel, Windows Updates (or Update & Security) and Check for updates to see if you have a pending update. Don't select a folder, but close the window asking you to do so.

This problem almost always means you have a Windows Update pending. It appears that the problem is due to how Windows has changed the properties of the folder permissions for C:Program Files (x86)Jasc Software Inc while updates are pending.

Uninstalling and reinstalling does not work, but there are two possible fixes. The problem is most common with Paint Shop Pro 7. Paint Shop Pro is known to break after a Windows Update by asking you to select a folder.
